Electrifying efficiently to save more in the long run

Paying for the transition to EVs can be challenging, but Power Trip customers are overcoming this challenge using Game Plan to add hundreds of EVs to NZ’s roads, saving millions on fuel costs each year at little extra cost to their fleet budgets.

One Power Trip customer has taken these savings to the next level, using Game Plan to:

  • Reduce their fleet by up to 40%

  • Manage their fleet in new, more efficient ways

  • Electrify their fleet faster and cheaper

Taken together, these steps are unlocking up to $36m in cost savings over the next 3 years!

The savings this fleet is making will more than cover the cost of getting to a 100% electric, zero-emissions fleet, including the marginal cost of procuring EVs and the cost of installing their own charging solutions.

By electrifying faster, this large fleet will be able to lock in millions of fuel cost savings sooner than anticipated.

The traditional approach wasn’t effective… so we created a new approach.

Background

The Customer needed to better understand its fleet use
One of our customers observed that their office carpark was constantly full of company vehicles. They began to wonder how efficiently their fleet was being used.

The traditional approach wasn’t effective
Their approach to utilisation and optimisation analysis was limited to the days and hours each vehicle was used, suggesting they could only remove 7 vehicles before impacting on the organisation’s productivity.

We created a new approach, based on their needs
Since Power Trip’s Game Plan solution had successfully helped them chart a pathway to an electric fleet, they asked us if Game Plan could help them optimise their fleet’s operations as well. After a few workshops to understand the purpose of the customer’s fleet, Power Trip created new utilisation features in Game Plan.

Game Plan’s new features deliver the results
These features, now available to anyone using Game Plan, quickly showed the fleet managers that behaviours like commuting and personal use had inflated utilisation metrics and that vehicles were not often used at the same time.

Banking the savings

Making the savings plan a reality
While about a third of the identified savings could be achieved through simple vehicle removals, maximising the savings required more innovative fleet management.

Needs-based vehicle and charger allocation
Fuel savings are lost when vehicles like utes are used to do short, urban trips. Similarly, productivity is lost when low-range EVs are taken on long trips. Maximising savings means all fleet assets need to be bookable and allocated based on the driver’s needs.

Automating fleet management
Asset statuses and driver needs change quickly. Automating asset data collection and adapting bookings and allocations in response means the fleet can run more smoothly with fewer assets.

Empowering drivers and their managers
Fleet managers are responsible for thousands of assets. Managing these in an optimal way, alone, is impossible. Giving drivers and managers the support and data they need to simply and easily manage their parts of the fleet ensures the fleet continues to meet their needs in an optimal way while maintaining the health of the assets.

Next steps…

Power Trip’s new fleet management suite
Better tools are needed to maximise the benefits of a zero-emissions fleet. This customer will be trialling a Beta version of Power Trip’s new suite of fleet solutions that have been designed with zero-emissions in mind.

Game Plan Groups
Specific, tailored Insights and reporting for team managers and drivers who are in charge of a small subset of the fleet. Groups empower individuals to maintain and manage their part of the fleet and track their own use and behaviours.

Drivetrain
Power Trip’s new planning, logistics and asset management tool. Allocate vehicle assets based on the travel and charging needs of each driver. With Drivetrain, chargers, vehicles and operations can be managed and tracked in one place.

Driven
Bring your drivers along on your fleet’s emissions reduction journey. Power Trip’s fleet app provides route tracking and productivity tools, data-driven education and incentives to support better, low-emissions travel choices among drivers.

Get electrification support

Deploy Game Plan alongside data from your telematics provider to kick-start your journey to a lower-cost, zero-emissions fleet and we will:

  • Simulate EV performance using your fleet’s data.

  • Locate the best places for charging stations.

  • Analyse your fleet utilisation patterns to help you find savings and build an electrification strategy in days, not months.
